How Foreigners Use the Subway in China: Tickets, QR Codes and Apps

Quick answer: Foreign travelers can use Chinese metro systems by buying single-journey tickets, using supported mobile-payment transport QR codes, transit cards, and in some cities supported bank-card tap-to-ride. For a first trip, buying a ticket at the station or setting up Alipay’s Transport QR code are both practical options.

China’s metro systems are one of the easiest ways to move around major cities once you understand the basic process.

Option 1: Buy a single-journey ticket

At the station, use a ticket machine or staffed counter.

Choose your destination station, pay the fare, and use the ticket or token according to the local metro system.

This is a good backup if your phone battery is low or a mobile QR setup is not working.

Option 2: Use Alipay Transport

In supported cities, open Alipay and look for Transport.

Typical steps are:

  1. Open Alipay.
  2. Tap Transport.
  3. Select the city.
  4. Complete any required identity setup.
  5. Activate the metro QR code.
  6. Scan when entering and exiting.

The exact screen can change as the app updates.

Option 3: Tap a supported bank card

Some cities now support direct entry with overseas-issued contactless bank cards on selected metro systems.

This is expanding, but it is not yet something I would assume works everywhere in China.

Check the local metro signage before relying on it.

Finding the right station and exit

Amap is extremely useful for metro navigation.

It can show:

  • line number
  • transfer station
  • number of stops
  • estimated travel time
  • station exits
  • walking route after exiting

The exit number matters. Choosing the correct exit can save a long walk around a large intersection or shopping complex.

Airport subway rides

Metro is often the most predictable way to avoid road traffic after arriving at a major airport.

If you are tired or carrying heavy luggage, DiDi may be more comfortable, but metro can be faster during congested periods.

Keep a payment backup

Even if you plan to use a QR code, keep another method available:

  • RMB cash
  • international card where supported
  • second payment app

FAQ

Do I need a Chinese bank account to ride the subway?

No. Foreign travelers have several ways to buy or access metro travel without a Chinese bank account.

Is the subway difficult without Chinese?

Usually not. Major-city systems have English station names and line information, and Amap can guide the route.

Can I use one QR code for two people?

Normally each passenger should have their own valid fare or ticket. Do not assume one person’s mobile code can cover a group.

What if my phone dies?

Buy a single-journey ticket at the station.
